- "After the prayers for the living and the endless litany of the dead (with Michael tacked on to the end), we held hands and said, “Living our best life today!”"
- — Hazel Grace Lancaster
Michael was a twelve year-old attendee of the Support Group who suffered from leukemia. He is first mentioned early on in the book, during the introductions of the support group. Michael says he is doing okay, but Hazel Grace notes he had to take the elevator. Revealed by Hazel that "He had Leukemia, he'd always had Leukemia"
He is mentioned again later in the book, when Lida is telling Hazel Grace about what she has missed, and it is revealed Michael had passed away due to his condition.
